The Urban Task Force Report: Towards an Urban Renaissance advocates high density, high quality, mixed use development. As part of a comprehensive mixed use masterplan the Vaux development will provide up to 1,000 new homes, regenerating a central brownfield site formerly used as a brewery.
Achieving quality urban regeneration lies at the heart of the planning and regeneration framework for the City of Sunderland and the Sunderland arc area. The former Vaux Brewery site fulfils all of the criteria for an imaginative mixed-use scheme that offers the potential to achieve a step-change in advancing the urban renaissance of the city centre and river corridor.
The Vaux development will make a significant contribution to Sunderland’s housing stock, and in keeping with the Government’s aim to create new housing in inner city locations.
Currently, such accommodation is in short supply in Sunderland City Centre and Vaux, with its dramatic views over the river is ideally situated to satisfy this demand.
Sunderland arc is currently developing a delivery strategy with private sector partners in order to formulate a strong plan for delivery which will still deliver the quality needed to deliver the required step-change at this gateway site.
