The Port of Sunderland represents the largest brownfield urban development site in the North East and one of the largest in England. This is a 106 ha (264 acres) redevelopment opportunity on the eastern edge of the Sunderland arc area. The Port estate is mainly owned by Sunderland City Council.
New opportunities exist to develop the existing Port operation. Further regeneration will be co-ordinated by Sunderland City Council.
A major study by engineering consultants Halcrow, funded by One NorthEast and English Partnerships, is well advanced. This exercise has examined market demand for redevelopment of the Port area and has explored legal and physical constraints, costs and a wide range of options. These options have identified several possible future uses including an employment led mixed-use scheme. Access has been improved via the Southern Radial Route, which was completed during 2007.
Following completion of the study, Sunderland City Council will endeavour to engage with a private sector partner to deliver their aspirations for the Port facility. The arc will continue to support key infrastructure provision to enable regeneration of the Port, support business relocation and increase employment opportunities on sites throughout Sunderland.
