School's Art Project
During 2007/08 the arc has been working in conjunction with Sunderland-based arts education consultancy firm Infinite Arts on an art project involving local schools. The aim is to create unique artwork on hoardings for key development sites in Sunderland, which will reflect positive images of Sunderland life.
Pupils at Hudson Road Primary School and Usworth School have been working with Infinite Arts, local artist Emma Norris and nationally renowned comic poet John Hegley, producing artwork around the themes of place and friendship.
The project was showcased at the 2007 Sunderland International Friendship Festival, where visitors were invited to draw pictures and create conversations on a giant Friendship Wall.
Emily Taylor, communications manager at Sunderland arc, said: “The arc's ambitious developments are not only about satisfying today’s needs and aspirations but also those of future generations. This project has provided an ideal opportunity to involve school pupils in a large-scale project where they will be able to see their work in a public setting.
“We wanted to work with themes that all children could relate to and place them in the setting in which they live.”
Pauline Taylor, director of Infinite Arts, said: “The project has been a huge success so far. The children have had great fun working with John Hegley and Emma Norris and have been challenged to take part in discussions and make links which they may not have otherwise made.
“The project has given pupils a chance to develop confidence and to work together and we discovered some real talent."
The school’s workshops have been supported by Sunderland City Council and Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens.
