Priority Areas Map

Sunderland arc was established in May 2002 to fulfil the aspirations of the Government’s Urban Task Force and subsequent Acts of Parliament to promote an urban renaissance.

The delivery of these aims is entrusted to a board of directors representing the founding partners of Sunderland arc, the business community and, most importantly, the people of Sunderland. To this end, an executive team has been established comprising specialists in property and urban regeneration. The team is working to reinforce the outstanding work undertaken over the last decade within Sunderland to enhance the economy, infrastructure and quality of life to the benefit of all the people of the city.

Sunderland arc is a public-interest, private company with the objective of delivering the regeneration of Wearside for the benefit of it’s people. The arc’s boundary includes the south bank of the River Wear from Claxheugh Rock in the west to the Port in the east. The area also includes the Stadium of Light, St Peter’s Campus and the National Glass Centre on the north bank of the River. This area comprises around 542 hectares of which some 319 hectares are `brownfield` development sites. Some 1,750 businesses currently operate within the arc boundary.

Sunderland arc’s remit is to:

  • act as the lead body for physical regeneration initiatives within its boundary
  • promote masterplans and development briefs to guide future development
  • coordinate site assembly and development
  • secure external (private) funding to supplement public sector investment.

The arc’s work builds upon much previous endeavour within Sunderland and the framework established by its Founding Partners. All of this endeavour has involved extensive community consultation and information - a process which will continue as Sunderland arc proceeds with its major projects.
